Through The Lens: WYDK: Featuring Ryan “Biz” Jordan

There has always been something intriguing to me about getting some behind the scenes details on a photo. I don’t know what it is about it but I just get stoked on seeing exactly how someone shot a specific photo and get a little insight into the process. I suppose it has something to do with the fact that every photographer shoots a little differently, which in turn makes each story unique in its own way. I can remember studying photos in magazines and borderline obsessing about the way that they were shot and honestly over the years not much has changed. I still find myself getting lost in photos to this day with the same level of curiosity that I had when I first started shooting. I suppose that is why I am introducing “What you didn’t know” for today’s TTL. Ready, set, go.

Broc Raiford Interview

“The T-bog photo was taken by Francis Delapena while we were shooting for my Odyssey welcome to the team edit at a DIY skate spot that had been getting built over the last couple months. It’s really fun and is the closest thing we have to an outdoor skatepark in the New Orleans area.”
Over the last few years, Broc Raiford has been popping up more and more with some incredible riding that definitely caught a lot of peoples attention. Recently, he found himself getting picked up by Volume and officially added to the Odyssey team after riding the flow team for a while. Broc is also just about to finish up high school so with all these new things going on, we figured it was due time to get ahold of him and find out more about him. Let’s check out what he had to say!

Photogallery: Chad Kerley’s Vitaminwater Invitational

Flash back about a month ago and word about a contest that Chad Kerley would be throwing started popping up on Twitter from a few of the people who got the first round of invites. A few days later it was announced that Chad and Vitaminwater would be inviting some of the top street riders in the world to The Bakery for a rider judged contest with $20,000 in prize money up for grabs.
Fast forward to this past weekend and 30 of the best riders in the world are crammed onto a limo bus cruising from the high rises of downtown Chicago into the secret location of The Bakery in a less than glamorous part of the city. Some of the riders had visited before but most had never been inside this playground of goodness. Walking into the building I was blown away with how amazing the spot was and just watching some of the guys start warming up the night before the contest it was clear there would be some amazing things happening within the next day.
Saturday came and once everyone was ready, the cameras were fired up for riders all over the world to watch the live feed of what was without a doubt one of the best contests to happen in BMX ever. I could go on and on about all the wild riding that went down, but I don’t think you want to read a book. So I’ll just keep it simple and say I can’t even begin process all the incredible things that went down and I’d like to give a huge shout out to Chad Kerley, Brian Kachinsky, Vitaminwater, Ride BMX and everyone that made this event possible.
While I was there, I pulled out the camera and shot some photos. Check out 70 photos from the event in this new PHOTOGALLERY!

Chad Kerley Vitaminwater Invitational

I’m going to be hitting the road and heading down to Chicago here in just a little bit for Chad Kerley’s Vitaminwater Invitational at The Bakery for the weekend. I’ll be posting up the live feed tomorrow courtesy of Ride BMX for you guys to check out.
It should be a pretty insane contest since I heard the rider list is up to about 30 dudes. So you are going to want to check out the live feed for sure. I’m going to try and shoot some decent photos so I can come up with a photogallery from the weekend for you guys to check out as well…
Posting may be a little slow between now and Sunday night so I apologize!
Through The Lens: 5 Tips For Better Composition

Composition is “the act of combining parts or elements to form a whole.” When it comes to photography it is an integral part of any photograph. The difference between a good photo and an amazing photo is all in the way you compose the image. You can take two photos with identical subject matter and lighting but the one with the best composition will always be more appealing to the masses. With BMX photography specifically it helps to pay close attention to the entire photo as opposed to simply worrying about the rider themselves. There is much more of a story to be told with each and every photo if shot correctly. Lets break it down and find out more about what it takes to compose a shot that will stand out from the rest.

Photogallery: Bike Hall 2012 Contest

The annual Bike Hall contest has been going on for around eight years now. It seems like each year a few bigger named riders make the trip over to Trutnov, Czech Republic than the year before to give the contest a go. This year, guys like Daniel Dhers, Daniel Sandoval and Michael Berran took to the course and threw down some bangers. We had photographer Aaron Zwaal spend some time shooting photos and do some partying at the contest and he came back with a bunch of rad photos.
You can check out 20 photos from some of the riding that went down in this fresh PHOTOGALLERY! Check it!

While they were there they spent their days cruising Saavedra’s Blue Bench trails, Mike Lakin’s yard, OB Skatepark and an endless supply of street spots.
You can check out the full edit from their trip above and once you are done there, check out a bunch of rad photos that Matt Coplon shot in this fresh PHOTOGALLERY!
