Steven Hamilton Interview
When Chris Harrison dropped me an email telling me to hit up Steven about an interview, I wasn’t quite sure how to approach this whole thing. I felt like I really knew nothing about him since his re-surfacing on the BMX scene with an all new style and everything. I didn’t have any idea of how he would respond to the questions either. However, here it is the Steven Hamilton interview. Leave your thoughts in the comments!

What was it that first got you into BMX?
I always thought bikes were cool.
In the last two months or so you have blown up on the BMX scene again.Where did you go for a while there?
I was working on a solo project.
How are things going with Federal? Do you have any big sponsor news at all you can tell us about?
Pretty good, no not really.
What do you have planned for 2009? Any big trips, video parts, filming for web videos? It seems like you have a new web edit daily these days.

You have had some amazing video parts over the years. If you could pick your all time favorite, which one would you pick and why?
Thanks. I can’t say one is my all time favorite, I like them all.

It seems like your style has changed up a fair amount lately. Are you still dropping huge drops to flat?
Not really, sometimes.
Have you ever wanted to go back to that huge stair set you trieddropping over and over again in the Orchid video “Step On It” just toget it done?
I only tried it twice, I might try it again.
What gets you motivated to ride your bike these days?
It’s one of my favorite things to do.
After the years of riding, what is one trick you have never been able to do? Do you wish you could do it or not really?
Nothing comes to mind.
How do you feel about the way BMX has been going these days?
It’s been going great for me.
Did you imagine still after all these years, your signature frame would still be such a popular frame?
I figured it always would be.
In your eyes, what is BMX all about?
Whatever you want it to be.
If you could change anything about BMX, what would you change and why?
I wouldn’t change it.
What are you usually up to when you aren’t riding your bike?
Maybe skating, I might be on walk or on the computer.
Your blog has been getting updated around 10 times a day! Where do you come up with the stuff you post?
A lot of the things I write about come from dreams the night before.
I would imagine spending so much time on you blog you have a few other favorite websites. Do you have any you think people should check out?

I think I’m good looking.
It seems like you have been doing a lot of skateboarding lately also,how is that going for you? Will you ever make a full skate edit?

I’d pick myself, I’d sleep all day.

I like Seattle and New York City, they are fun/scary.
What are some things you would like to accomplish in the next few years?
Develop my riding style more, I’d like to be more flexible, physically and mentally.
If you could change anything about the world, what would you changeand why?
Less pollution, I love animals.
What kinds of advice do you have for the kids out there just getting into BMX?

He seemed like he was being interrogated. Was he mad at you or something? You should of asked him more jibberish questions like “Where does your invisiable pet cow go after the thunderstorms?”. Belive it or not thats a good icebreaker.

Hell yeah. Who cares what Steven Hamilton thinks. Life’s not about riding a bike. But riding a bike is a lesson in life. At least, thats what I got from the interview. And shit, lay off with the drug comments. Can’t he just be wild?
What the interview didn’t meet your expectations? It didn’t go along with you preconceived image of what Mr.Hamilton was, or should be?
Get a life you fools. Drugs or not Steven doesn’t seem afraid to try something new whether its good or bad for him. That’s how you LEARN. But you should probably stay safe in your anonymous blogging safety netted environment. It’s all you know.
This interview lacked anything and everything that could ever be interesting. This guy is a drugged out loser.
Drugged out loser or not, boy did he change how people rode street. He deserves some credit for that.
I still click on every Hamilton related story from BMXfeed, but there’s only so much I can take of this new, dirtbag Hamilton before I tune him out forever.
I think I speak for a lot of riders when I say I miss the old Steven Hamilton.
I think he had a couple of cool responses snuck in there under all of the ‘I don’t really care about this question’ responses.

Steven is giving fresh breath to culture of bmx! But kids will never understand it.

the questions were longer than the answers… maybe do some research about topics that interest him or at least fuck with him to get a rise.
all we get is some effortless not-funny sarcasm and light topical questions… i take it this was through email – conversation would be better
The answers aren’t the problem, it’s the questions. They are stock, boring ass questions that every rider has been asked. Adapt the questions for the particular person then you will have an interesting interview.

Steven Hamilton is a very interesting man.
All you guys think hamilton is washed up because he isn’t some chase dehart faggot. Hamilton has been doing his own thing for as long as I can remember and that’s why he is awesome. He does his own thing and doesn’t care if it’s trendy or even has anything to do with riding. He is living his life and having fun. He’s different and that scares the living shit out of guys.
you guys wouldnt know this but doing big gaps like he does can hurt. the way i see it is maybe he rides trails and park now is because you can land smooth. you cant ride as crazy as he did for ever just like any other sport or physical activty people come out of there prime as they get older.

Interviews on this site have never been a strong a point. Why would Steven feel compelled to answer in depth here? Especially when it comes to questions about party habits and tricks he wants to get done. Email Spinner about what he wants to accomplish. The whole interview feels like some star-struck kid was almost on the verge of asking, “WHAT DRUGS YOU LIKE TO EAT, BRAHHH?” but pussed out.
Worry about your own lives. Worry about your future children. Even worry about the economy. But fuck right off with worrying about some dude riding a bike and doing his shit.

You can’t deny the influence on street riding and creativity that Steve Hamilton had.
In 2005, when the All I can eat video came out, he stood out from the rest. While everyone was doing whips, rails and grind tricks, Steve had his own style happening:
Riding pegless, short frame, big gaps, huge drops, nose wheelies, tire slides, curved wall rides and huge 180s etc.
I read a lot on the net about him messing with drugs. I don’t know how much of it is true, or if it really matters. Regardless, I’m glad to see him making a comeback. I look forwards to seeing what he will bring to the table with his riding in the future.
